Ceramic at Bornholm march 2010
The Glas and Ceramic School Bornholm/Danmarks Designskole.
In Nexø, at Bornholm, Danmarks Designschool Bornholm is located. Formerly known as Glas og Keramikskolen. It is a 3 year education where you work concentrated with either glass or ceramic, in different ways. Right now at the school 10 students from the ceramic department work on their final project. The final project is going on for about 15 weeks and end up with an exam and exibitions around in Denmark and Sweden.
I went to the school and talked to Carla Jørsum, she is one of the students working on her final. The student are halfway through the project, objects and themes starts to find their shape and meaning. The first weeks of the project is spend on defining and framing a problem, and the problem has to be approved by the teacher of the department.
Carla works with ceramic landscapes/scenarios, she works with recognizable elements with a twist.
She builds up the landscapes of single parts and objects that together makes the scenario to one whole, and also open for the posibilities to let it all change from time to time. It is important for Carla that the scenario create a sense, mood or feeling for the audience rather than being prescriptive. She wants to let people find their own way into the ”story” and only lead them into a part of it. Carla works with scale to create certain moods and tension between the ceramic landscape and the viewer. The result of working with that is until now is, among others, a giant pink mushroom-like figure, tree-figures with juicy green drippling glazes. The material is essenstial in the way Carla works, she constantly investigate in the expression it offers to her proces, the limits and the benefits. In Carlas point of view the final project is about enjoying the process, having fun, taking advantage of the schools posibilities, (ex.work in large scale) and about trying to define and identify and develop your own cermaic identity.
It is a departure and end, but- more important- it is the beginning of the proffesional life as a ceramic artists.
The photos are scetches and test.
